The origin of the partnership between SLPs and teachers begins at the preservice level. This affliation of a speech and language pathologist and the classroom and special education teacher is a key colloboration for students with communication disorders. One way to solidify this relationship is to be able to have pre-service educators have an understanding of communication disorders.
I have the privilege of teaching a Communication Disorders class at Providence College each summer. This group of special educators is pursuing their Masters in Special Education and bring their work experiences into the classroom.
Throughout the summer they worked with a student with communication disorders, first conducting a language sample as a baseline for their development of a comprehensive lesson plan.
The students learned about speech and language development and signs of difficulties. The did a deeper study on one communication disorder and shared that with their colleagues. Intensive work was done on vocabulary, question development, story grammar, reading and writing skills and the student with communication disorders.
One in-class project was the design of a classroom demonstrating their understanding of the environmental needs of students with communication disorders illustrating the specific accommodations and supports that might be needed.
The below are the completed lesson plans:
There were some very creative pre-reading activities. For ‘Digging up Dinosaurs’ there is a fossil digging activity that so enamored the student that he changed his birthday party from a SuperHero party to a paleontologist party.

As a speech and language pathologist, I know that sharing my knowledge about communication disorders with my team members strengthens the bond. When there is knowledge, there can be change, and it is our students with communication difficulties that ultimately benefit.
