I just finished reading Hidden Potential: the Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam M. Grant and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It doesn’t center on the concept of ambition but rather on aspiration. Ambition pertains to the achievements one aims for, whereas aspiration relates to the individual one strives to be. This is my book review of Hidden Potential: the Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam M. Grant
The book presents a treasure trove of knowledge, revealing its riches through simple, captivating writing. Although it’s categorized as a self-help book, it transcends the usual preachiness. Grant’s expertise in psychology and his status as a social scientist shine through his narrative. He weaves concepts with real-world stories, making the ideas feel genuine and attainable. The tales of ordinary individuals achieving greatness through honesty and perseverance are particularly uplifting.
The core message is the belief in the latent potential within us all, waiting to be unleashed. Grant explores the myriad factors and circumstances that guide one to achieve excellence, enriched with real-life stories illustrating how support systems and opportunities critically influence personal development. He emphasizes the vital roles played by various supporters, from parents and educators to organizations and mentors, in fostering individuals with high potential.
What sets this book apart are the compelling stories interlaced throughout, each meticulously researched and presented with empathy. For example, the narrative of an immigrant’s son who overcame language barriers to become a NASA astronaut at 47, or the story of a deaf musician admitted by The Royal Academy of Music, showcasing groundbreaking achievements. These stories, more than the concepts, linger in the mind.
I particularly could relate to the discussion of education. As someone who has been in education for 45 years I appreciated the research on education. I am encouraged by some of the systems that are in place to assist those students that might need scaffolding to assist them in achieving their goals.
I began my educational career in the South Bronx and Harlem during an especially turbulent time in New York City. This has deeply influenced my own teaching and want to help champion those students who have not had the same opportunities as others.
Finishing the book sparked an immediate desire to revisit it, signifying its lasting impact. The inclusion of clear, meaningful illustrations serves as an effective visual summary, enhancing the text’s messages.
