It will be interesting to see what categories they are using to do their sorting.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your child questions:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why did they sort the books the way they sorted them?<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could they think of another way to sort them?<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is their biggest pile?<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do they think this is their biggest pile?<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prakovic.edublogs.org\/2020\/05\/02\/fiction-versus-nonfiction-a-fun-active-way-to-teach-distance-learning-or-classroom\/book-863418_1920\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1671\">&nbsp;<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they have not sorted them into fiction versus non-fiction (and this truly may be likely). You tell them there is another way to sort the books. Take the books and put them in piles of fiction versus non-fiction.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prakovic.edublogs.org\/2020\/05\/02\/fiction-versus-nonfiction-a-fun-active-way-to-teach-distance-learning-or-classroom\/book-863418_1920\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1671\">&nbsp;<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have your child tell you what they notice about the piles.&nbsp; What is the same about the books in the piles?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prakovic.edublogs.org\/2020\/05\/02\/fiction-versus-nonfiction-a-fun-active-way-to-teach-distance-learning-or-classroom\/book-863418_1920\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1671\">&nbsp;<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After they have told you what they notice, talk to them about fiction and nonfiction, and fill in the missing information.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Fiction<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Not real<\/li><li>Author\u2019s imagination<\/li><li>Illustrations<\/li><li>Animals do things that&nbsp; people do<\/li><li>Story Grammar: characters, setting, plot, beginning, middle, end.<\/li><li>Tells a story<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>There can be imaginary characters ( fairies, unicorns, cartoon characters)<\/li><li>Point of view ( first person, I, me\u2026.. third person he, she)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Non-fiction<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Real<\/li><li>Gives facts<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Photographs<\/li><li>Text Features: Captions on pictures, table of contents, glossary, index, may have maps<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to get too deep into it as it should be more of a discussion about books.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/prakovic.edublogs.org\/2020\/05\/02\/fiction-versus-nonfiction-a-fun-active-way-to-teach-distance-learning-or-classroom\/book-863418_1920\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1671\">&nbsp;<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might find that you have a great deal of a certain kind of book. One of the changes, when they went into the new standards, is that there was a switch to non-fiction books. Whereas most books read in the classroom were in the past primarily fiction, the standards have us making sure that we are doing as much non-fiction as fiction.
